What Is Pulp Capping?
Pulp capping is a dental procedure designed to protect the exposed or damaged pulp of a tooth by placing a protective material directly on top of it. This procedure encourages the pulp to heal while preventing further infection or damage. At Austin Center for Endodontics, Dr. Ketan Amin and Dr. Arif Karim offer pulp capping treatments to help patients preserve their natural teeth and avoid more invasive procedures like root canals. Pulp capping is typically recommended when the pulp has been exposed due to cavities, trauma, or other dental issues, offering a less invasive solution to save the tooth. For more information about pulp capping, contact our Austin, TX office to schedule a consultation.
How Is Pulp Capping Performed?
Pulp capping is performed by first removing any decay or damaged tissue from the affected tooth, ensuring a clean surface for the protective material. Dr. Amin or Dr. Karim will carefully apply a medicated material, such as calcium hydroxide or mineral trioxide aggregate, directly onto the exposed pulp. This material helps promote healing and forms a barrier to prevent bacteria from entering. After the pulp is capped, the tooth is sealed with a dental filling or crown to protect it from further damage.
What Are the Benefits of Pulp Capping?
Pulp capping offers several benefits for preserving the health of the tooth and avoiding more invasive procedures. Some benefits include:
- Promotes healing of the tooth pulp
- Prevents infection and further damage
- Preserves the natural tooth structure
- Avoids the need for a root canal
- Minimizes the risk of tooth loss

My forms and any additional information was sent to me ahead of time. Check in was a breeze and the office was cozy and calm. Dr. Amin quickly assessed the problem area and explained the necessary root canal and the steps it would involve in an easy to understand manner. Dr. Amin and his assistant were professional, courteous, and very efficient. My consultation and treatment were complete in under an hour which I really appreciated as I was nervous for my first ever root canal. I really appreciate the care that is evident at this office and would definitely go back if ever needed. Thank y'all so much for your help!
