What Is Surgical Endodontics?
Surgical endodontics is performed to address complex issues within the tooth's root and surrounding tissues that cannot be treated effectively with a traditional root canal. At Austin Center for Endodontics, Dr. Ketan Amin and Dr. Arif Karim offer this advanced treatment to help preserve the natural tooth and restore dental health. Surgical endodontics is typically recommended when there is persistent infection, injury, or other complications that require surgical intervention to ensure long-term tooth function and health. It aims to eliminate infection, promote healing, and save the tooth from extraction. To learn more about surgical endodontics and if it can help restore your oral health, contact our Austin, TX office.
How Is Surgical Endodontics Performed?
Surgical endodontics is performed by making a small incision in the gum tissue to access the tooth's root and surrounding tissues. First, Dr. Amin or Dr. Karim will carefully examine the affected area and clean out any infection or damaged tissue. In some cases, they may remove a portion of the root or surrounding bone if it is infected or causing problems. After the damaged tissue is removed, the area is thoroughly cleaned and sealed to prevent further infection. The gum tissue is then sutured back into place, and a follow-up appointment is scheduled to monitor healing.
What Are the Benefits of Surgical Endodontics?
Surgical endodontics offers several benefits for patients with complex root or tissue issues that cannot be treated with a standard root canal, including:
- Preservation of the natural tooth
- Relief from pain caused by infection or damage
- Prevention of tooth extraction
- Successful treatment for inaccessible root areas
- Restoration of tooth function and health

Fantastic experience. The communication with the office before my consultation and procedure was stellar. Upon my initial call, I was easily taken care of and scheduled by Patrick. My forms and any additional information was sent to me ahead of time. Check in was a breeze and the office was cozy and calm. Dr. Amin quickly assessed the problem area and explained the necessary root canal and the steps it would involve in an easy to understand manner. Dr. Amin and his assistant were professional, courteous, and very efficient. My consultation and treatment were complete in under an hour which I really appreciated as I was nervous for my first ever root canal. I really appreciate the care that is evident at this office and would definitely go back if ever needed. Thank y'all so much for your help!
