Root resorption is a condition where the body starts to break down and absorb the root structure of a tooth, often caused by injury, infection, or orthodontic treatment. At Austin Center for Endodontics, Dr. Ketan Amin and Dr. Arif Karim provide care for patients experiencing root resorption, helping to address the issue and preserve dental health. This condition can develop without noticeable symptoms. If untreated, however, it can lead to tooth instability, pain, and eventual tooth loss, making early detection and intervention essential for preserving oral health. Early diagnosis and treatment are essential to protect the affected tooth and prevent further complications. Contact our Austin, TX office to learn more.

Root resorption occurs when the body's natural processes mistakenly begin to break down the root structure of a tooth. This can happen due to trauma, infection, excessive pressure from orthodontic treatments, or even systemic conditions. The process involves specialized cells called osteoclasts or odontoclasts that dissolve and absorb the root's hard tissue. Depending on the type, root resorption may occur internally, starting from the tooth's pulp, or externally, affecting the outer root surface.

Root resorption repair provides numerous benefits by addressing the condition and preserving your dental health, including:

  • Prevents further tooth damage and loss
  • Restores the stability and functionality of affected teeth
  • Alleviates discomfort or pain caused by resorption
  • Protects surrounding teeth and tissues from additional damage
  • Supports long-term oral health with timely intervention

Fantastic experience. The communication with the office before my consultation and procedure was stellar. Upon my initial call, I was easily taken care of and scheduled by Patrick. My forms and any additional information was sent to me ahead of time. Check in was a breeze and the office was cozy and calm. Dr. Amin quickly assessed the problem area and explained the necessary root canal and the steps it would involve in an easy to understand manner. Dr. Amin and his assistant were professional, courteous, and very efficient. My consultation and treatment were complete in under an hour which I really appreciated as I was nervous for my first ever root canal. I really appreciate the care that is evident at this office and would definitely go back if ever needed. Thank y'all so much for your help!

Am I A Candidate For Resorption Repair?

Ideal candidates are typically individuals who have been diagnosed with internal or external root resorption but still have enough healthy tooth and bone structure to make saving the tooth possible. To determine if you are a suitable candidate, Dr. Amin and Dr. Karim will perform an assessment. This comprehensive evaluation includes a detailed examination of the affected tooth, a review of your dental and medical history, and advanced imaging or scans to get a clear view of the root and surrounding bone. This allows us to accurately diagnose the extent of the resorption and determine the most effective treatment plan for your specific needs.

Can root resorption be reversed?

Root resorption cannot be reversed since it involves the breakdown of the tooth structure. However, early diagnosis and treatment can help stop its progression and prevent further damage. Dr. Amin or Dr. Karim will develop a treatment plan to preserve the affected tooth and maintain your oral health.

How can I prevent root resorption?

While some causes of root resorption, such as trauma or systemic conditions, are unavoidable, maintaining regular dental appointments in Austin, TX, can help with early detection. Practicing good oral hygiene and addressing dental issues promptly can also reduce risks.

Is root resorption painful?

In early stages, root resorption is often painless and goes unnoticed. As the condition progresses, you may experience pain, sensitivity, or discomfort, especially if the surrounding tissues become inflamed.
