What Is Root Canal Therapy?
Root canal therapy is a dental procedure used to treat infections or damage within the pulp of a tooth, aiming to save the tooth and relieve pain. At Austin Center for Endodontics, Dr. Ketan Amin and Dr. Arif Karim specialize in root canal therapy, removing the infected or damaged pulp, cleaning the inside of the tooth, and sealing it to prevent further infection. This procedure helps preserve the tooth, avoiding the need for extraction and allowing it to function normally again. How Is a Root Canal Performed?
A root canal is performed by first numbing the area around the affected tooth to ensure comfort. Dr. Amin or Dr. Karim will then create a small opening in the crown of the tooth to access the pulp chamber. The infected or damaged pulp is carefully removed, and the inside of the tooth is cleaned and disinfected. Once the area is clear of infection, the tooth is sealed with a biocompatible material to prevent further contamination. In some cases, a temporary filling may be placed before the final sealing. After the procedure, the tooth is often restored with a crown to restore its full functionality.
What Are the Benefits of Root Canal Therapy?
Root canal therapy offers several key benefits, including:
- Relief from pain caused by infection or damage
- Prevention of further infection and damage
- Preservation of the natural tooth, avoiding extraction
- Restoration of tooth function and appearance
- Long-term solution for saving a damaged tooth
Root Canal Therapy Reviews
Fantastic experience. The communication with the office before my consultation and procedure was stellar. Upon my initial call, I was easily taken care of and scheduled by Patrick. My forms and any additional information was sent to me ahead of time. Check in was a breeze and the office was cozy and calm. Dr. Amin quickly assessed the problem area and explained the necessary root canal and the steps it would involve in an easy to understand manner. Dr. Amin and his assistant were professional, courteous, and very efficient. My consultation and treatment were complete in under an hour which I really appreciated as I was nervous for my first ever root canal. I really appreciate the care that is evident at this office and would definitely go back if ever needed. Thank y'all so much for your help!
Went to my regular dentist for a semi annual appt and found one of my front teeth had gone dead and changed colors. They recommended Dr Amin. Called same day and got an appt for the next day to see Dr. Amin for consultation and treatment. Great customer service by his crew and great treatment by Dr. Amin. He came in and explained what probably happened to the tooth. Showed me again that it had no feeling to it and the root was dead. We went ahead with a root canal and we were all done in about 40 minutes! They were great!
Ketan Amin, DMD is the ONLY Endo I want to have work on my teeth! He is gentle, kind and thorough in explanation. His staff is also very kind and informative and sensitive to the pain that goes with needing a root canal. He and his assistant do everything to keep you as comfortable as possible during the procedure, and quick to answer any questions before and after. I was so relieved to be able to hold an appointment for a few days after I sensed a problem, awaiting a DDS to confirm. Dr. Amin has worked on 2 other teeth for root canals and I'm so grateful he was there for me again. Kudos to Austin Center for Endodontics.
I was referred here for my root canal - staff was caring, clean and had attention to detail. I was not waiting long and they even sent me home with a little care kit. Highly recommend this place!

Am I A Candidate For Root Canal Therapy?
If you are experiencing severe tooth pain, prolonged sensitivity to heat or cold, or swelling and tenderness in your gums, you might be a candidate for root canal therapy. Ideal candidates are those with a tooth that has infected or damaged pulp but is otherwise structurally sound enough to be saved. During your consultation at our Austin, TX office, Dr. Amin or Dr. Karim will conduct a thorough examination, which typically includes X-rays, to assess the extent of the infection. This allows them to confirm your candidacy and create a personalized treatment plan to relieve your pain and preserve your natural tooth.
Frequently Asked Questions
Does a root canal hurt?
Root canal therapy at Austin Center for Endodontics is typically no more uncomfortable than getting a filling, thanks to advanced numbing techniques. Most patients report little to no pain during the procedure, and the treatment actually relieves the pain caused by the infection. Any post-procedure discomfort is minimal and can usually be managed with over-the-counter pain relievers.
What happens if I delay or skip root canal treatment?
Delaying root canal therapy can lead to worsening pain, abscess formation, and the risk of losing the tooth altogether. The infection can also spread to other areas of your mouth or body, leading to more serious health issues. Dr. Amin and Dr. Karim recommend addressing the issue promptly so your tooth is saved and your overall oral health is maintained.
How do I care for my tooth after a root canal?
After a root canal in Austin, TX, practice good oral hygiene, including brushing, flossing, and regular dental visits. Avoid chewing on the treated tooth until it’s fully restored with a crown, if required. Proper care ensures the treated tooth remains functional and healthy for years to come.
