Tooth pain isn't something to ignore — especially when it's persistent, sharp, or accompanied by other symptoms. It's often your mouth's way of telling you something is wrong. In many cases, this can be an indication that the inner pulp of a tooth has become infected or inflamed, meaning a root canal could be needed to relieve pain and save your tooth.

At Austin Center for Endodontics, we help patients find relief with diagnosis and precise care. Recognizing the early signs you need a root canal can help prevent more serious dental issues and allow for timely, comfortable treatment. What is a root canal?

Root canal treatment is a dental procedure used to treat infection or damage in the inner pulp of a tooth. During a root canal procedure, your endodontist will remove the inflamed or infected tissue, clean and disinfect the inside of the tooth, and then seal it to prevent further infection. Modern root canal treatment is highly effective, often virtually painless, and helps preserve your natural tooth — allowing you to avoid extraction and maintain a healthy smile.

How do you know if you need a root canal?

If you're wondering how to know if you need a root canal, it's essential to understand the common symptoms that indicate a deeper problem. Ignoring these signs can lead to worsening infection and even tooth loss. Here are some of the most telling signs you need a root canal:

  • Persistent or severe tooth pain: One of the most common root canal symptoms is ongoing or intense tooth pain. This discomfort may be constant or triggered by biting, chewing, or pressure. If the pain doesn't go away with over-the-counter remedies, it could indicate a serious infection inside the tooth.
  • Prolonged sensitivity to heat or cold: If your tooth is overly sensitive to hot or cold temperatures, this could point to nerve damage that may require root canal therapy.
  • Swollen or tender gums: Inflamed, swollen, or painful gums around a specific tooth may be a sign of a tooth abscess, which often requires a root canal to treat effectively.
  • Tooth discoloration: A tooth that turns gray or dark compared to the surrounding teeth may be showing signs of internal damage or decay. This type of discoloration can indicate that the pulp inside the tooth is deteriorating, signaling the need for root canal treatment.
  • Pain when biting or touching the tooth: Increased pain when biting down or even lightly tapping the tooth can be a sign that the inner pulp is infected. If the pain worsens with pressure, you may be a candidate for root canal therapy.

What does root canal pain feel like?

Root canal pain can vary from person to person. For some, it may feel like a sharp, stabbing pain, while others may experience dull, throbbing aches or sensitivity that won't go away. Pain may also radiate to the jaw or ear on the same side of the face. If you're experiencing persistent or unexplained dental pain, it's time to see a specialist.

Why prompt treatment matters

Delaying a necessary root canal can result in the spread of infection, damage to nearby teeth, including cracked teeth, other necessary treatments, including an apicoectomy, or even tooth loss. The sooner the problem is treated, the more likely it is that your natural tooth can be saved. Early intervention with a root canal also leads to faster healing and less discomfort.

Fantastic experience. The communication with the office before my consultation and procedure was stellar. Upon my initial call, I was easily taken care of and scheduled by Patrick. My forms and any additional information was sent to me ahead of time. Check in was a breeze and the office was cozy and calm. Dr. Amin quickly assessed the problem area and explained the necessary root canal and the steps it would involve in an easy to understand manner. Dr. Amin and his assistant were professional, courteous, and very efficient. My consultation and treatment were complete in under an hour which I really appreciated as I was nervous for my first ever root canal. I really appreciate the care that is evident at this office and would definitely go back if ever needed. Thank y'all so much for your help!

Ketan Amin, DMD is the ONLY Endo I want to have work on my teeth! He is gentle, kind and thorough in explanation. His staff is also very kind and informative and sensitive to the pain that goes with needing a root canal. He and his assistant do everything to keep you as comfortable as possible during the procedure, and quick to answer any questions before and after. I was so relieved to be able to hold an appointment for a few days after I sensed a problem, awaiting a DDS to confirm. Dr. Amin has worked on 2 other teeth for root canals and I'm so grateful he was there for me again. Kudos to Austin Center for Endodontics.

Dr. Amin and staff were wonderful. I emailed them on the weekend and they called me on Monday morning with an appointment available immediately. I was so happy to have Dr. Amin help me with this tooth as he helped with 2 other teeth in 2015 and 2017. He is so gentle and a great dentist.

Went to my regular dentist for a semi annual appt and found one of my front teeth had gone dead and changed colors. They recommended Dr Amin. Called same day and got an appt for the next day to see Dr. Amin for consultation and treatment. Great customer service by his crew and great treatment by Dr. Amin. He came in and explained what probably happened to the tooth. Showed me again that it had no feeling to it and the root was dead. We went ahead with a root canal and we were all done in about 40 minutes! They were great!
